Remembrance Day is a time to pause, reflect, and honour those who gave their lives in the line of duty. It’s a day that unites us in solemnity, as we remember not just names and ranks but the individuals behind them—the fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, and colleagues who laid down their lives for a greater cause. Their sacrifice reminds us of the price paid for the freedoms we enjoy today and the ongoing commitment to peace that each of us holds in our hearts.
On the 11th day of the 11th month, we join together to pay our respects, whether it’s through observing a moment of silence, visiting a war memorial, or wearing a red poppy. Each of these acts, however small, honours the memory of the brave men and women who stood in the face of conflict.
Remembering Through Community: Honouring Vern
We are especially proud to remember those who served among us. Vernon Littley, a valued member of our team, served in Royal Artillery before joining us.
Vern's experiences and values continue to enrich our workplace and remind us of the unique sacrifices made by those who have served.
Here's what Remembrance day means to Vern:
"For me, Remembrance Day, is a very special time and enables me to reflect on my own service and to all those who have served in conflicts and those who sadly have made the ultimate sacrifice. This year, I will be thinking of those who I served alongside as well as those sadly lost in more recent conflicts.
For those I served with including Sgt John Jones (Jonah) who was sadly killed in Iraq in 2005, Lance Corporal George Davey and Sgt Dave Wilkinson who were both killed in Afghanistan in 2007 and many more.
Earlier, this week, on route to see one of my current apprentices, I visited Jonah’s grave in Tidworth, Wiltshire and spent a few moments in reflection, remembering the words of Marcus Aurelius “It is not the young man who misses the days he does not know. It is us, the living, who bear the pain of those lost days”. Remembrance Day gives us time to reflect and remember."
Whether it’s through dedication to excellence or commitment to teamwork, Vern embodies the qualities of courage, honour, and selflessness that we so deeply admire in our veterans. This Remembrance Day, we honour not only those who have fallen but also those who continue to carry their legacy forward in civilian life.
How We Can Remember Together
Remembering the fallen on Remembrance Day is not simply about looking back but about carrying their memory forward. Here are a few meaningful ways to join together in their honour:
Observe the Two-Minute Silence: At 11 a.m. on November 11th, a two-minute silence allows us to pause and pay our respects. This quiet moment is a simple yet powerful way to reflect on the lives lost and consider our collective duty to promote peace.
Wear a Poppy: Wearing a poppy symbolises a visible commitment to remembrance. The funds raised through poppy sales often go toward supporting veterans and their families, making it a small act with a big impact.
Share Stories and Memories: Sharing stories—of both those who served and those who continue to uphold their legacy—keeps the spirit of remembrance alive. If you have a story about a loved one who served, share it with friends, family, or colleagues. By honouring their memory in this way, we ensure that their courage is never forgotten.
Engage in Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on what remembrance means in today’s world. It reminds us of our responsibility not only to remember the past but to create a better future—one where peace and understanding triumph over conflict.
Remembrance Day: A Day to Reflect and Carry Forward Their Legacy
Remembrance Day is a time to honour the brave individuals who gave their lives in service, and it’s an opportunity to commit ourselves to the pursuit of peace. In remembering the sacrifices made, we are reminded of the humanity, courage, and resilience of those who served. Their stories, often full of both hardship and hope, serve as a guiding light for us all.
On this Remembrance Day, let us not only recall the past but also draw inspiration to build a future worthy of their sacrifice. As we remember the fallen, may we find strength in their memory and a renewed commitment to peace, justice, and compassion for all.
