Safety Health and Environmental Technician

At GLP Training, our Safety, Health, and Environment Technician apprenticeship is designed to equip apprentices with the critical skills needed to excel in diverse industrial settings, ranging from office environments to dynamic construction sites. This programme ensures that apprentices become adept in implementing effective safety systems and advising on best practices to prevent harm to individuals and the environment.

The SHE Technician plays a pivotal role in collaborating with management and operational teams to ensure compliance with statutory health, safety, and environmental requirements. This role is essential in supporting the organization’s efforts to adhere to both legal standards and internal SHE policies. Apprentices will learn to assist the management team in implementing these requirements thoroughly across all company operations.

With the option to embed a NEBOSH qualification, this apprenticeship provides an additional layer of expertise, recognised globally. This qualification enhances the apprentice’s understanding of risk management and safety principles, preparing them to handle complex challenges in SHE management more effectively.

Daily activities in this apprenticeship include:

Developing, reviewing, and overseeing the implementation of safety systems at work.

Delivering essential training sessions, such as toolbox talks and safety inductions, to ensure all team members are equipped with necessary safety knowledge.

Investigating and reporting on incidents to prevent future occurrences.

Analysing safety data and presenting findings to the management team to inform decision-making processes.

Safety, Health, and Environmental Technicians play a crucial role in fostering an organisational culture that prioritises the well-being of all employees, ensuring they can safely return home to their families each day. Moreover, these professionals are instrumental in protecting and enhancing global environmental resources. Through inspiring and influencing workplace practices, apprentices learn to demonstrate the benefits of responsible working, the importance of legal compliance, and how effective SHE management can significantly improve operational activities.

Anyone responsible for managing aspects of an organisation’s health and safety is suitable for this course. The SHE Technician will be able to work in organisations of varying sizes and industries; the role could be based in one location or may involve travel across a range of contracts.

The training is a blended learning delivery model, which occurs on the job during working hours. A structured learning and assessment plan is put in place to test core components of the course along the way.

This consists of:

1-to-1 monthly meeting: Approx. two hours with a GLP Trainer (face-to-face or telephone)
Online learning courses and/or group sessions
Building an electronic portfolio of work-related evidence
Maths and English Level 2 (if not previously achieved)
6 hours a week spent working towards your apprenticeship.
End Point Assessment by an external examiner to complete the qualification, consisting of a resourcing project assignment and a professional discussion.

To attain the qualification, you will undergo an assessment throughout your apprenticeship, culminating into a final evaluation known as the End Point Assessment (EPA), which can get you a result of a Pass, Distinction, or Fail.

Moreover, the apprentice must have completed the following gateway requirements prior to beginning their EPA:

Obtain a Functional Skills Qualification (if applicable).

End Point Assessment Gateway:

The Safety, Health and Environmental Technician EPA is administered by Highfield Qualification our designated End Point Assessment organisation (EPAO).

The EPA process commences once the employer confirms that the apprentice consistently meets or exceeds the standards outlined in the occupational standard.

The employer must confirm that they think the apprentice:

Is working at or above the occupational standard as a safety, health and environment technician

Has the evidence required to pass the gateway and is ready to take the EPA

End Point Assessment:

EPA's typically takes about 4 months and apprentices are required to complete:

Knowledge Exam: Multiple choice questions.

Project report and presentation with questioning: The apprentice completing a significant and defined piece of work that has a real business benefit. The project should be designed to ensure that the apprentice’s work is relevant to their role and allows the relevant KSBs to be assessed for the EPA.
Professional discussion underpinned by portfolio of evidence: Apprentices will conduct a project in the form of paper based or electronic means.

The combined score of these methods will provide an overall final grade for the apprenticeship.

Upon completion, learners will be able to join the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at the TechIOSH level. They will also be eligible to join the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) at the Affiliate level.

After completion, you may go into roles such as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, Health and Safety Advisor, Process Safety Engineer, or a QHSE Manager.
